HISTORY: Blackout's father was a top research scientist in the field of quantum physics. During an experiment, he managed to open a pinhole doorway into a dimension of pure dark energy. Recognizing the near-limitless energy potential of the strange matter inhabiting this dimension, he created a small generator the size of a pen that possessed the energy output of a small power plant.
His discovery was leaked however, and a terrorist organization broke into his home to steal the plans. Dr. Karamoto fooled the terrorists by giving them the notes and plans for unworkable prototypes, but he was killed anyway. Mai, an up-and-coming physicist in her own right, watched the entire affair, and vowed revenge on the people who killed her father.
Knowing where her father kept the real notes and prototype, she was able to build a staff in order to give herself the power necessary to take revenge on the group.
However, the terrorists, operating on faulty designs, opened too large a portal and the energy began spilling into the surrounding area. Using her staff, she was able to corral the energy and close the portal, but the terrorists had been killed in the eruption, preventing her from gaining her revenge.
Starr approached her later and explained that she could have a new purpose fighting the new breed of evil spreading over Earth, and Mai, now calling herself Blackout, accepted Starr's offer.

SUPERHUMAN POWERS: Blackout's staff taps into the energy of an unknown dimension. It allows her to fly and project energy blasts and force fields. Blackout's gloves contain microcircuitry which act as a "key" to allow only her to use the staff. The staff can also return to Blackout's hand on verbal recall.
